OpenAI launched an AI training course for educators.

The company introduced its "ChatGPT Foundations for K-12 Educators," a free online course to help K-12 teachers integrate ChatGPT in the classroom.

OpenAI collaborated with Common Sense Media, a non-profit, for this project, which was designed to help educators understand and implement AI into their classroom work.

"Schools across the country are grappling with new opportunities and challenges as AI reshapes education, with our research showing that seven in 10 students are already using tools like ChatGPT for their schoolwork," said Robbie Torney, Common Sense’s Senior Director of AI Programs.

"With this course, we are taking a proactive approach to support and educate teachers on the front lines and prepare for this transformation," he added.

OpenAI stated that 98% of the participating educators reported learning actionable strategies gained from the course.

"We're in the early stages of AI adoption in K-12, and it will take all of us—educators, technologists, and organizations—working together to ensure this technology enables teachers and improves learning outcomes for students," said Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s VP and General Manager of Education.

She added that their priority is to equip educators with resources for using AI tools thoughtfully and setting classroom standards for responsible use.

The nine-lesson, one-hour course is free for all school districts and teachers. It contains essential lessons about artificial intelligence and approaches to ensure the privacy and safety of learners/students.

Almost a dozen school districts have started using it, including the Challenger School, the San Bernardino School District (California), and the Agua Fria Union High School District (Arizona).

The course covers data privacy considerations, AI fundamentals, ideas for incorporating AI into educators' daily classroom work, and ethical use guidelines.
